Catch of the Week

Putting the squeeze on the May 15th Opener

Hello sportsfans.  And welcome to the weekly breeze here at Ballard’s Resort.

What’s new on Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods?  How about some speculation.  And specifically I’m talking about the 3.5 million walleyes that are available for us to catch this summer.  Now that’s some exciting news!

The spring weather has been absolutely tremendous.  Warmer than average temps have the main basin clear of ice…  And I would have to guess that the majority of the walleyes are at or near the completion of their annual spring spawn.

What’s that mean for the upcoming opener on May 15th?  Well…  For starters…  I would have to predict that it will be a lake bite.

To date the water clarity is near perfect.  Lower than average flow levels should not be a major factor.  But I do see the opener being somewhat more non-traditional in that most walleyes more than likely will have already left the confines of the river.

Not a huge deal.  And again…  With a predicted 3.5 million fish available…  Just about any location on Lake of the Woods should be good.

We are excited!  Our spring projects are coming along quite nicely!  And soon we will be yelling:  Set the hook!
