Ballard’s Resort Raffle Fundraising
Catch - $10,000
A raffle fundraiser designed in Minnesota for the people of Minnesota.
As “The Land of 10,000 Lakes” is synonymous to the state of Minnesota… Fishing is one and the same with Ballard’s Resort on Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods.
Three years ago with the perspective of parents, coaches, board members, and sports enthusiasts in mind, Ballard’s Resort created a new fundraising program for the benefit of youth athletics in the state of Minnesota. This raffle fundraiser is presented in good faith to assist programs and to give all kids equal opportunity to participate in the activity of their choice.
The Raffle…
This needed to be something easy… Something with a high profit margin. But no order taking, product sorting, or delivering.
The solution… A raffle - the longest running and most effective means of fundraising - with a twist. A fishing trip to Ballard’s Resort.
An organization purchases an economical fishing package that includes three nights lodging and two days guided walleye fishing for up to six people. Then they sell raffle tickets for the trip at $10 per ticket. Beyond paying the base price for the fishing package, all remaining sales are profit for the organization. The potential is HUGE. A club has the ability to make $10,000.
The Resort…
Since 1961 Ballard’s Resort has been providing memorable fishing vacations on Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods. As a third generation family business we specialize in guided trophy walleye fishing. Our guests stay in modern cabins, ranging from one to three bedrooms, that include all the comforts found in a traditional north woods setting. On the water our expert guides provide world class fishing adventure. We provide the poles, bait, tackle, and fish cleaning… And we will even bait your hook.
After fishing, relax on our waterfront deck, or take a dip in the pool. Then top off your night with one of our signature dishes from the riverside dining room. Or spend more time with family and friends in our idyllic riverside lounge that is rich with Lake of the Woods history.
For more information on our raffle fundraising program – Please call us 1.800.776.2675 or email (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
- Step 1: Set a goal to raise $2500.00, $5000.00, $7500.00, or $10,000.00.
- Step 2: Promote and raffle a summer fishing trip to Ballard’s Resort on Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods. This package includes three nights lodging and two days guided walleye fishing. The winning ticket is valid for six people. The package rate is $1499.00. (organize _________ people to sell _________ tickets each).
- Step 3: The drawing will be held on _________. The cost for your organization to purchase this package is $1499.00 payable to Ballard’s Resort.
- Step 4: The cost to arrange the set up, printing, and shipment of 1200 raffle tickets is $400.00. Or you can arrange your own printing and cover the costs incurred. (have _________ tickets printed by _________).
- Step 5: Sell. Sell. Sell. The suggested selling price is $10.00 per raffle ticket. (run ticket sales from _________ to _________).
| A team of 25 participants | Selling 20 tickets each | $3500 profit |
| A team of 25 participants | Selling 30 tickets each | $6000 profit |
| A team of 25 participants | Selling 40 tickets each | $8500 profit |
Distribute the bulk of the tickets among team participants - Have KIDS SELL - with supervision they will be the most successful! For remaining tickets, set up booths at local sporting events, tournaments, craft fairs, or retail locations.
Sell with a cause! Utilize local newspaper, television and radio to get the word out. Distribute Ballard’s Resort posters around your area stating your cause, dates of the raffle and how to buy tickets. Do special advertising if you are selling tickets at specific events. i.e. Sporting Goods Store Saturday December 1st 12-5 p.m. or Home Boys Hockey game Friday January 10th 4-8 p.m.
The average selling period is two months. Set your goals, and let everyone know expectations. Monitor the ticket sales by each participant on a weekly basis.
Take the worry out of ticket printing and have us print the tickets for you! If you do have the tickets printed locally, please email a copy to Ballard’s Resort before printing, as we need to proof the tickets.
Create a contest among your team - Hand out prizes for top sellers - Make it FUN! When organized properly, this will be your BEST fundraiser of the year!

Restaurant
With more cabins come more people, and the need for more dining space in our Riverside Restaurant. To satisfy this growing need, we've eliminated the whirlpool/sauna area of the lodge, and replaced it with an expanded section for dining.
With the new addition, we can now seat another twenty people in our restaurant, and this section is connected to the main dining area. The total number of people the room will now accommodate is sixty. If you include the eating space in the bar area, we're actually capable of seating one hundred people throughout the entire facility.
Big Food & Big Fun! That's our motto in the kitchen.
Bar
After dinner, move over to our attractive bar for a relaxing evening of conversation and fun with colleagues and friends. Our fully stocked, newly remodeled bar attracts resort guests and locals alike, all eager to share stories of their day's adventures on the lake. Whether you're here for a week or just a weekend getaway, our lounge provides a great place to kick back and enjoy yourself when you're not out fishing the lake.
The Main Lodge
With the beautiful waterfront view, the lodge serves as an excellent gathering place to sit and converse with friends or to make new acquaintances. From an early morning breakfast to a late dinner, the lodge offers food and a full service bar. You may select a package plan that includes some or all of your meals.
Overview
If you've been looking for a fishing paradise, your search is over! When it comes to angling, the Lake of the Woods area is year round second to none in the Midwest. At Ballard's, our motto is "Large Enough to Serve You, Small Enough to Know You," and you'll find that we're committed to honoring that sentiment at all times. Whether it's our comfortable and modern cabins, our beautiful and spacious lodge, or even our fully stocked restaurant, you'll find that our goal is to make your fishing adventure as enjoyable as possible.
Of course, fishing isn't the only attraction we have to offer. You'll find a variety of recreational activities such as hiking, biking, wilderness drives, water sports, snowmobiling, golf, miles of sandy beach, and scenic seaplane flights. We are a four-season resort destination, and offer something for everyone.
Then again, it's hard not to focus on the fishing when it's this good! We've got guided trips that will show beginner and expert alike the top spots. While our summer fishing is outstanding in itself (we're on the shore of a veritable walleye factory), our winter fishing is unbeatable, with our comfortable angling houses placed in all the perfect spots. Finally, we offer the Walleye Connection, a series of all-inclusive vacations (including round trip on a luxury coach) that are perfect for your family, private organization or business associates.
Whether you’re planning a corporate retreat, family vacation or weekend of fishing with your buddies, Ballard’s Resort has something for every taste. Join us for a video tour of the facilities, services and activities you’ll find at Ballard’s and on Lake of the Woods.

Seasonal Fishing
We hope that by providing you with this calendar, you will be able to plan your fishing trip at Ballard's according to your preferred fishing method. Ballard's provides the best in accommodations as well as year round fishing services. For more information, click on any of the months listed below.
May
Starting with the mid-May opener, expect to find easy-to-catch walleyes in the confines of the Rainy River or along the channel that empties into Lake of the Woods.
- Small boat fishing, guided trips, or boat and motor rentals are popular.
- Live bait fishing with jigs and minnows is the norm...
- Anticipate steady action on walleyes with post spawn occuring. Primarily male walleye will dominate the catch, with your occasional trophy fish being mixed into the equation.
- Spring fishing can offer an excellent opportunity for a trophy class female.
- Guided Walleye Fishing Packages include: lodging in housekeeping cabins, fishing 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with Coast Guard licensed guide, angling equipment, bait, tackle, on-board restroom, and fish packaging.
- Post-spawn northern pike become aggressive.
- Shallow bays of the Rainy River are great for spawning smallmouth bass, with the males being extremely aggressive.
June
Early June marks the onset of shoreline activity and is one of the most productive times of the year for walleye.
- Anglers should drift live bait along sandy and rocky shorelines. Expect numbers of aggressive 1 to 1 1/2 pound walleyes with occasional trophies.
- Live bait rigging with minnows, crawlers, and leeches is the a standard presentation.
- June is definitely a numbers game... And as the weather heats up... So do the walleyes!
- Our guided charter boat service gives you the advantage of quality angling in luxury. Fish with the area's most experienced guides and enjoy the day in comfort.
- The ever popular shore lunch is a great plan to complete a perfect day!
- Northern pike congregate in shallow bays or roam weed lines. Troll crankbaits or throw spoons and spinnerbaits.
- Smallmouth bass begin their summer pattern on the river. Use small crank, spinner or buzz baits along rock piles.
July/August
Warmer water temperatures move walleyes deeper to the mid-lake mud flats and rock reefs. This is TROPHY time on Lake of the Woods!
- Mid summer makes for HOT walleye fishing. We see more fish & more trophy class fish during this two month span, than any other throughout the summer season.
- Our most POPULAR techniques... Hook-n-line fishing over rock reefs... Or trolling mid-lake mud flats...
- If you love to jig fish, and you're looking for one of the most exciting opportunities in walleye fishing, then July and August are your times to visit.
- Bait fishing with jigs, or bottom bouncers with spinner rigs produce excellent numbers & trophies over rock reefs.
- Trolling using downriggers, planer boards, or leadcore line, with crankbaits, are also proven methods.
- Guided Charter Boat Excursions are popular because we put you on the fish! We use 27' Sportcrafts, equipped with all the necessary fishing equipment, electronics, and on-board restroom facilities.
- Our Coast Guard licensed guides fish the lake year-round and provide the professional service that assures you of a quality angling adventure.
- Again, this is traditionally considered our finest trophy season.
September
September is a transition period. Depending on water temperatures, fish can remain in mid-summer patterns or begin fall behavior.
- The late summer days of September offer excellent opportunities for consistent walleye fishing.
- You may find multiple techniques produce walleyes.
- Walleyes begin staging for their fall migration upstream.
- September is most notable for our ever popular "Fall Classic" guided fishing packages!
- Northern pike and smallmouth bass increase activity in the Rainy River.
October/November
Make your reservations early! Falling temperatures during the months of October and November put walleyes on the move—and that means trophy time, right at our doorstep!
- Walleyes follow baitfish out of the lake and into the confines of the Rainy River.
- Vertical jigging while anchoring is a successful method for fall fishing.
- Without a doubt this is another popular "trophy season". A time to chase monster walleyes on Lake of the Woods.
- Smallmouth bass go deep.
- Trophy pike fattening for winter.
- Try mixing the fall walleye run with grouse, waterfowl, or deer hunting.
December/January
During the winter months of December and January, the hottest action in the Midwest is guided winter angling. Stay in cozy cabins, ride out to select fishing spots in toasty track vehicles, and fish in heated angling houses. Catches include walleye, sauger, and perch.
- First-ice walleyes start shallow near the shorelines and eventually move deeper as the season progresses.
- Early morning, mid-day, and late afternoon are most productive.
- Walleyes and perch are located near channel areas and deeper mud flats. As for saugers, expect higher numbers and more consistent action through the day.
- Opportunity for northern pike angling in nearby shallow bays.
- Snowmobilers will find miles of groomed trails, including those leading from northeast and central Minnesota and the new Can-Am Trail to Manitoba, Canada.
February/March
During the winter months of February and March, we roam over miles of Big Traverse Bay, continuing our search for walleyes & sauger. Our fish houses are among the best on the lake! And our guides are second to none...
Here at Ballard's we have taken the winter fishing industry to a new level. Our committment to service is complimented by the great pride we have in our ability to "track fish", move our fleet, stay with the more active schools of fish, and see to it that you have the best experience possible on Lake of the Woods.
- Continue basic jigging techniques over mud flats or near rock reefs.
- Saugers stand out as the most active and sought-after species.
- Late winter walleyes return to the shallows and prepare for the spring run.
April
April showers bring May flowers.
- Fish houses must be removed from the lake by April 1st.
- Spring ice out finds river fishermen chasing walleyes in the confines of the Rainy River.
- Walleye season closes on April 14th.
- Get ready for summer fishing!
Limits and Laws
Exotic Plants and Animals
Minnesota waters are threatened by several species of exotic plants and animals that can be unknowingly spread by water users. It is illegal to transport some of these species, such as Eurasion watermilfoil, zebra mussels, and ruffe, on public roads or to launch a boat or trailer with these species attached.
- Remove any visible plants and animals from your boat, trailer, and other boating equipment before leaving any water body.
- Drain water from the motor, livewell, bilge and transom wells at the ramp or access before leaving any water body.
- Empty your bait bucket on land before leaving any water body. Never release live bait into a water body, or release aquatic animals from one water body to another.
- Wash and dry your boat and other boating equipment to kill harmful exotic animal species that were not visible at the boat launch. Before transporting to another water body, either rinse your boat with hot tap water, spray your boat with high-pressure water, or dry your boat and equipment for five days.

Varieties of Fish
(information from the MN Department of Natural Resources)Walleye/Sauger
The walleye is the most sought-after fish in Minnesota. Its thick, white fillets, handsome shape and coloring, and elusive nature make it the ultimate prize among anglers. Each year, anglers in Minnesota keep roughly 3.5 million walleyes totaling 4 million pounds. The average walleye caught and kept is about 14 inches long and weighs slightly more than 1 pound. The walleye is named for its pearlescent eye, which is caused by a reflective layer of pigment, called the tapetum lucidum, that helps it see and feed at night or in murky water.
A close cousin of the walleye is the sauger. Sauger have a more limited distribution than walleyes, and they don't grow as large. The two species look similar, but you can tell them apart by looking at the tip of the lower part of the tail. That part of the tail is white on a walleye, but not on a sauger.
To ensure that lakes produce enough walleyes to keep up with growing angler demand, the DNR protects habitat, limits the catch through regulations, and stocks fish where natural reproduction is limited and other desirable fish species will not be harmed. In recent years, the DNR has also instituted special regulations that protect medium-sized walleyes on several lakes to increase the average size of walleyes that anglers can catch.
- Identification
- General description: A medium-sized fish that has big, marble-like eyes, and a white spot on the lower tip of its tail. Its color varies from olive to dark gray, with gold-flecked sides.
- Length: Average length is about 15 inches.
- Weight: Average about 1.2 pounds.
- State Record
- Walleye: 17 pounds, 8 ounces, 35.8 inches, Seagull River (Cook County). 05/13/1979.
- Walleye-Sauger Hybrid: 9 pounds, 13.4 ounces, 27 inches, Mississippi River (Goodhue County). 03/20/1999.
Yellow Perch
The yellow perch is one of the most commonly caught fish in Minnesota. This smaller cousin of the walleye is good to eat and eagerly bites worms, but it often is so small that anglers throw them back into the water. Like sunfish and bluegills, perch are considered "panfish," or fish commonly caught to be cooked in a frying pan and eaten.
- Identification
- General description: A small fish that is usually yellow on the sides with wide dark bands coming down the sides from its back.
- Length: Average length is about 6 inches but some reach a foot or more.
- Weight: Average about 1/3 pound.
- Color: Yellow with dark bars.
Northern Pike
This voracious predator is one of the easiest fish to catch because it so willingly bites lures or bait. Whats more, northerns produce chunky white fillets that many anglers say taste as good as walleyes. Most northerns caught by fishing run 2 to 3 pounds, though trophies over 20 pounds are caught each year. A close cousin to the muskellunge, the northern pike lives in nearly all of Minnesotas lakes and streams.
The quickest way to tell a northern pike from a muskie is to note that the northern has light markings on a dark body background, while muskies generally have dark markings on a light background. A foolproof method is to count the pores on the underside of the jaw: the northern has five or fewer; the muskie has six or more. Northerns also have rounded tail fins, compared to the pointy tail fins of a muskie.
- Identification
- General description: A long and toothy fish that has a head shaped like a large duck bill and is often mistaken for a muskellunge.
- Length: On average, about 26 inches long.
- Weight: The average is about five pounds.
- Color: Mostly light yellow and silver markings on a dark olive background.
- State Record
- 45 pounds, 12 ounces, length not available, Basswood Lake (Lake County), 05/16/1929.
Sturgeon
The lake sturgeon is Minnesota's biggest fish. It can weigh more than an adult human.
- Identification
- General description: The torpedo-shaped lake sturgeon lacks scales. It is covered instead with plates, called scutes. Its nose is flattened and slightly upturned, with four barbels underneath. Its mouth, which it can extend like a tube, is set back from the end of the snout. The top of its tail is longer than the bottom.
- Size: Lake sturgeon generally range from 5 to 40 pounds and 20 to 55 inches long. But sturgeon may grow to more than 300 pounds and 8 feet long. The Minnesota record lake sturgeon, caught in the Kettle River, weighed 94 pounds, 4 ounces.
- Color: Sturgeon are green-yellow to blue-gray to black. The young are reddish-brown. Like most fish, their color changes as they get older and larger.

Family Vacations
If you’re an ardent fishing enthusiast, you probably have very warm and dear memories about the sport from your childhood. Perhaps you remember the first time your dad showed you how to cast a rod. Maybe you fondly recall getting up at 4:30 AM so you could go out and fish before the break of dawn with your parents. You might even remember that sense of excitement — laced with squeamishness — that you felt the first time you baited a hook with a live worm.
At Ballards, we firmly believe that a fishing adventure is an unbeatable way for families to spend the kind of time together that is so hard to come by in today’s fast-paced world. Whether it’s fishing on the lake or enjoying one of the many other attractions nearby, a trip to Ballards Resort is the perfect environment for your kids to form their own special memories.
