The Lake
Back on track…
Hello Sportsfans… And welcome to the weekly snag here at Ballard’s Resort on Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods. Now let’s get to it.
After coming off what we would consider a previously slow week of ice fishing it was determined by the guides that a big move was necessary. And that they did. Shuffling (45) fish houses over the course of three days is no easy task. But they succeeded. And the effort paid off.
The bite had slowed to the point that we were starting to question our location. So then what? Send flyers. Flyers meaning scatter houses due north and east in search of better fishing grounds. And that’s pretty much what the guides found. Better fishing. A four mile jump and a couple feet deeper.
Our weekend bite (Friday / Saturday / Sunday) was quite good. Once again a solid mix of walleyes and saugers. But this time more trophy fish in the mix and some exciting stories about slot size catches. Not to mention the slug of ‘pout that made for added entertainment. And we’ll take it.
We are now approximately 10 miles offshore and fishing 34 feet of water. It seems as though, for now, we’ve been able to locate a pretty active school of aggressively feeding fish. So that’s the good news. We made a huge move. And it paid off.
Now… What’s the key? Overall… I would have to say the number one thing is “electronics”. Those that caught fish and those that caught trophy fish were keying in with their locators. I am hearing reports of suspended fish, especially the larger walleyes, being anywhere from a foot to fifteen feet off the bottom. And they are in a feeding mode. Most likely bait-fish consisting mainly of tulibee. The walleyes LOVE ‘em.
Colors? Techniques? Our guides will pretty much tell you the same. Bright colors in dark water. There’s really no secret to fishing the mud. You just need to get your bait down there. And the electronic fish finders are the bonus. If you can see them on the screen you have a better chance of catching them.
Overall… What’s the word for this week? We’re “on ‘em”!
