The Lake

Into the deep-freeze…

Hello sportsfans…  And welcome to the weekly spin here on Lake of the Woods.

What’s the word?  COLD.  December COLD…

This week we are looking at highs in the single digits and lows that will dip below the zero mark.  Which is good news for those of us in the ice fishing biz, and those of you looking to tap Lake of the Woods during the month of December.

What I’m seeing from shore?  This afternoon I spun the loop in our area of the south shore.  The river is still showing pockets of open water…  Especially in main channel areas…  Which is very typical for this time of year.  Generally the river is the last area to get winter access.

Four-Mile bay, for the most part, now appears to be ice covered.  Except again for the main (current / channel) areas.  Again…  Similar to the river…  Open pockets of water do exist.

To the main lake it appears as though we have ice on the south shore as far as the eye can see.  I didn’t have my binocs with…  So it was tough to tell just how far out the ice reaches at this point.

Our plan?  Same as always.  Let mother nature do her thing.  And we will get out there when conditions are right and by all standards good to go.

Right now we are seeing NO fishing activity on the lake in our area.  To my knowlege…  No one is even tip-toeing out in search of a walleye.  Not yet anyway.

My best guess?  It’s going to be cold all week and through the weekend.  But how much ice we can make each day is hard tSeo predict.  Actually…  I don’t think anyone can predict it.

So I would have to say…  And this is merely a predition…  Maybe by mid to late next week you will start seeing some activity on the main lake.  And again…  That’s pending on mother nature.

It’s all day by day at this time.  And the best I can do is to keep you updated per 24 hour period.

No ice fishing yet.  But it is coming.

Hopefully by late next week we will be able to get our houses out and start getting after those fish.
