The Lake

More greenbacks…

Hello sportsfans.  And welcome to the weekly blitz here on Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods.

It was a pretty special weekend here at Ballard’s Resort.  Great numbers of fishermen, pretty decent numbers of fish, and just a spectacular couple days of winter weather.

All in all…  I would have to say life is good.

The influx of greenbacks (walleyes) was really the highlight of the weekend.  We put a whole bunch of anlgers on the ice and the results were much improved over the week prior.  Better numbers and better overall average size.

Anytime we can cruise the ice in late February and catch limits of walleyes tells me we must be doing something right.  The sauger numbers might not be quite as good as we would like to see, but we’ll certainly take that walleye bite.

With a bit of a different twist we fished a later afternoon bite on the north end of Big Traverse that paid some dividends.  More so with the trophy sized walleyes.  I’m thinking the guides told me we had 40+ slot fish (19” to 28”) and 5 trophies (over 28”) for the day on Saturday.  That’s pretty good hustle.  And more than likely better results than you would normally see if we were pinned to the south shore.

Our locations have not varied much since we made our big move to the northern haunts.  We have shacks spread from Knight to Garden and even a few places in between.  Whether it be on the reefs or adjacent in the mud there are fish up there to be caught.

Wow.  Is it late February already?  That can only mean one thing.  March is next…  And it’s traditionally been some of our best fishing.

Set the hook!
