Slidin’ North…

Hello sportsfans.  And welcome to the weekly stack here on Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods.

Wam!  Bam!  It’s February man!

Where are we?  What’s the scoop?

North.  Three Sisters and Knight Island north.  It’s February and it’s time to do some reef fishing.

What’s the report?  Good.  We’ve been holding our own.  Nice numbers of sauger to keep the action plentiful, and some decent walleyes mixed in to round out the days catch.

Trophy fish?  Yes.  Matter of fact one of our New Ulm (Winter Walleye Connection) guests caught a 30 inch trophy just yesterday. 

And perhaps the best “fish story” of the weekend came on Friday when a grandfather / grandson pair from Lamberton (Winter Walleye Connection) managed to ice a 29 1/2 inch walleye.

But here’s the tale on that 29 1/2 incher:  Grandpa caught a fish.  A big fish.  A fighting trophy walleye fish.  Approximately half way off the bottom the fish was gone.  Line snapped.  Damn.  A favorite jig breaks loose and a fish tale is spun.  The one that got away…

Minutes later in the same shack it’s time for grandson to catch a fish.  A big fish.  A monsterous fighting fish.  A trophy fish that a 7 year old boy struggles to land.  But yes!  It happens!

The trophy walleye is landed and a 29 1/2 incher is iced.  And guess what?!?!  Grandpa also got his JIG back.  It was the same fish.  Grandpa’s jig was still in the mouth of the trophy fish.  Awesome!

Hey…  Til next time.  We’re movin and shakin.  Our fish numbers are decent and the bite is steady.

Right now it’s all about being north and being on the fish.
